The common raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is a heavy-set, fox-like canid native to East Asia, named after its black facial markings. The Russians introduced raccoon dogs into the wild in the European part of the former Soviet Union to establish a valuable new fur-bearing species, where they are now widespread. Common raccoon dogs are the only canids known to hibernate, often doubling their weights between June and October to provide sufficient energy stores for the winter. This species is highly generalist in their diets and have adapted well to urban living, partially due to their climbing ability.
