The Bengal fox (Vulpes bengalensis) is the morphologically most average vulpine fox. They span much of the Indian subcontinent, ranging from the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal to the southern tip of the Indian peninsula and are generalist mesocarnivores. Despite their adaptability and large range, they are not considered abundant, often found at low densities and with highly fluctuating population dynamics based on prey availability. This species has also been a staple of local folklore for thousands of years, often appearing as wise trickster characters.
