Predator of medium-sized ungulates and livestock in harsh, low-productivity mountain systems. Lives in small family groups or packs at very low densities, with seasonal and altitudinal movements following prey.

HABITAT & ECOLOGY

High-elevation steppe, alpine meadows and cold deserts of the Himalayan range and Tibetan Plateau, generally between ~3,000 and >4,500 m, in open, sparsely vegetated landscapes with rugged topography.
