The Falkland Islands wolf (Dusicyon australis) is one of the two extinct canid species, native to both the Western and Eastern reaches of its namesake islands. The first recorded sighting of a Falkland Islands wolf was by Captain John Strong in 1690, and Charles Darwin wrote about it, noting that, even at his time, the species had been significantly diminished due to persecution and would likely be extinct before his own death. He was correct in his assumption: the last endemic wolf was hunted in 1876, and the last captive members died not long after.
