The African wolf (Canis lupaster) is a wolf native to North Africa, West Africa, the Sahel, northern East Africa, and the Horn of Africa. Their diets are diverse, ranging from small rodents, invertebrates, and fruit to gazelles, duikers and warthogs. These wolves often occupy the abandoned burrows of aardvarks and warthogs, modifying the chambers to suit their lifestyles better. This species appears commonly throughout its region’s mythology, such as in the ancient Egyptian gods Anubis, Wepwawet, and Duamutef, or as the sacred animal of the city of Lycopolis.
