South American fox [EX]

The South American fox (Dusicyon avus) is an extinct species native to the Pampas and Patagonia regions of the south-central and southern parts of South America. Despite an extensive fossil record, little is known about this species, including exactly when it went extinct, with many estimates placing it between 1454–1626 AD, though anecdotal evidence indicates it might be later. The reason for extinction similarly remains unclear, though a combination of anthropogenic and climatic factors leading to a genetic bottleneck, which eventually rendered the species non-viable, is a common suggestion.
