Taxonomy & Nomenclature Working Group

Currently CSG Taxonomy Working Group (TWG) is waiting for the comprehensive assessment of the whole family Canidae by a nominated Taxonomy Revision Taskforce. This work was initiated in 2023. The Taskforce has 14 permanent members with additional experts helping to assess and revise taxonomy of all the extant canid species and subspecies. All existing evidence is considered to support or refute proposed species and subspecies. The taxa without enough evidence are left open, and the need for more research is indicated. Results of this work will be published in early 2027, and then used in the future work of the TWG.
