The swift fox (Vulpes velox) is a small fox native to the western Great Plains grasslands of North America through to southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. They are distinguishable from other North American canids by black patches on each side of the muzzle, a black tail tip, and small body size. Like most canids, the swift foxes are omnivores, and their diet includes grasses and fruits as well as small mammals, carrion, and insects. This species was once severely endangered and extirpated from much of their range, but due to intensive conservation efforts, they have recovered to a Least Concern status.
