The coyote (Canis latrans) is the most versatile of all canids, and their plasticity in behaviour, social ecology, and diet allows them to not only exploit but also thrive in almost all environments modified by humans. While historically restricted to the south-west and plains regions of the USA and Canada, and northern and central Mexico, the removal of wolves and land conversion since 1900 has allowed the species to expand into all of the USA and Mexico, southward into Central America, and north into Canada and Alaska. Their diet is generalist, but can comprise up to 90% meat.
